2022 awards summary

In 2021 the Elmwood High School Legacy Fund provided the following awards:

  • 8 EHS Legacy Fund bursaries of $1,200 each 
  • The Boughton Scholarship of $1,500
  • The Val Harder Memorial Scholarship of $2,000
  • The Bill Petrie Memorial Football Scholarship of $1,000

EHS Legacy Fund bursaries

Initial funds for the bursaries were raised during Elmwood High’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2008. The bursary fund continues to grow through donations from friends and supporters of Elmwood High.

EHS Legacy Fund bursaries are awarded to a graduating EHS student based on the following criteria:

  • A well-completed application form
  • Financial need
  • Pursuing post-secondary education in any field or trade at a vocational or academic institution. A minimum of one bursary will be awarded to a student pursuing vocational studies. 
  • Minimum average to-date of 60% (40S & 40G)
  • Well-rounded personal development:
    • Volunteerism
    • Outside interests/extra-curricular activities such as musical training, sports, fine arts, performing arts, etc.
    • Leadership experiences such as student council, outside groups, etc.

Val Harder Memorial Scholarship

The Val Harder Memorial Scholarship was established by Val’s husband Ken, to commemorate her 36 years as a beloved Human Ecology teacher at Elmwood High. For many years, Val orchestrated the annual EHS fashion shows, and she worked to create many wonderful memories for students.

The Val Harder Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduating EHS student based on the following criteria:

  • A well-completed application form
  • Has shown achievement in the area of Human Ecology; preference will be given to a graduate who pursues study in this field.
  • Minimum average to-date of 60% (40S & 40G)
  • Financial need
  • Well-rounded personal development:
    • Volunteerism
    • Outside interests/extra-curricular activities such musical training, sports, fine arts, performing arts, etc.
    • Leadership experiences such as student council, outside groups

Bill Petrie Scholarship

The Bill Petrie Memorial Scholarship was established by Bill’s wife Arlene and their two sons to commemorate his life. Bill was both a great football player and a football coach at Elmwood High School. Bill’s legacy and love of the sport live on through this scholarship.

The Bill Petrie Memorial Football Scholarship is awarded to a graduating EHS student based on the following criteria:

  • A well-completed application form and a letter of recommendation from the head football coach
  • Significant contribution to the EHS football program
  • Good sportsmanship
  • Financial need
  • Pursuing post-secondary education in any field or trade at a vocational or academic institution
  • Well-rounded personal development:
    • Volunteerism
    • Outside interests/extra-curriculum activities such as musical training, sports, fine arts, performing arts, etc.
    • Leadership experiences such as student council, outside groups, etc.

The Albert John, Georgina & Edith Patricia Boughton Scholarship

The Albert John, Georgina and Edith Patricia Boughton Scholarship was established by the children of Pat Boughton to celebrate the lives of their grandparents and mother, who were long-time residents of Elmwood. Edith Patricia (Pat) was a graduate of Lord Selkirk High School, the local high school prior to Elmwood High and was supportive of the University of Manitoba.

The Boughton Scholarship is awarded to a graduating EHS student based on the following criteria:

  • A well-completed application form
  • Honour roll (40S & 40G)
  • Must be pursuing post-secondary education at the University of Manitoba
  • Financial need
  • Well-rounded personal development:
    • Volunteerism
    • Outside interests/extra-curricular activities such as musical training, sports, fine arts, performing arts, etc.
    • Leadership experiences such as student council, outside groups, etc.
